Have you ever heard of Kiribati before?

The nation of Kiribati is a group of islands in the middle of the pacific ocean.

It is hot, there are coconut trees everywhere, and the water is as blue, as blue, as blue.

‘The Flying Canoe’ begins on Tarawa - the capital of Kiribati.

A few things you need to know…

THE FLAG

The Kiribati flag depicts the sun, the sea and the Frigate Bird!

The Frigate bird is the national bird of Kiribati, it has huge powerful wings, flies across the Pacific ocean and can even sleep while it’s flying!

THE CANOE

In Kiribati, it is a community effort to build a canoe. The main body is crafted with timber and is held t together by strong and sturdy rope made from the coconut husk. All canoes have outriggers that are attached to the side which keeps the vessel steady in stormy seas.

ATOLLS & ISLANDS

Kiribati is made up of 32 atolls, and 1 island.

An atoll is a ring-shaped island, including a coral rim that encircles a lagoon.

The ocean that surrounds the atoll is dark blue and has waves. The lagoon in the middle is usually bright turquoise and is a bit more calm than the ocean.

YOUR COMPASS

Because most i-Kiribati people live on atolls, we can use the ocean and lagoon as our direction - especially when we’re talking about left and right. Like if we’re talking about what side of the road we’re standing on, we say ‘Hey! Pick me up on the ocean-side of the road!’. In The Flying Canoe, our directions are North, South, Ocean-side or Lagoon-side.

THE FLYING CANOE is a Threshold experience created by Marita Davies, Lucy Harris, Zoë Barry, Tahli Corin and Sarah Lockwood.

It features the voices of Bobby Macumber, Teaote Burabura Davies and Matari Davies as well as performances from members of the Kiribati diaspora living and working in Victoria. Cultural consultation from Teaote Burabura Davies and Katerina Teaiwa.

THE FLYING CANOE was recorded on the unceded lands of the Taungurung People and developed with the support of Multicultural Arts Victoria, Regional Arts Victoria and the Victorian Kiribati Association.
